Tuesday of the Fourth week of Advent
O Clavis David
The Hebrew word messiah means “the anointed.” In ancient Israel the kings were anointed with oil, marking them as special servants of the Lord. Consider the anointing of King David from the Old Testament: “Then Samuel, with the horn of oil in hand, anointed him in the midst of his brothers, and from that day on, the spirit of the Lord rushed upon David” (1 Sm 16:13). With the anointing came the spirit of the Lord and real power. Understanding the Key of David (Clavis David) — sung of in today’s O Antiphon — draws on this history of Israel and points to the Kingdom unlocked by the Messiah.
Lord Jesus, Son of David, pour forth your spirit in my heart. Open to me the gates of your kingdom, that I may one day find myself numbered among the saints. Amen.
What keys do you carry, and why? When you grab your keys today, think of Christ, the Clavis David, the Key of David.
